Brushing Techniques for a Healthier Smile

Why Brushing Technique Matters

Brushing your teeth is a fundamental part of oral hygiene, but doing it correctly is key to preventing tooth decay and gum disease. Let’s explore some effective brushing techniques that can significantly improve your oral health.

Try these techniques

Position:

  • Start by positioning your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums. This angle helps the bristles achieve a gentle sweeping motion just beneath the gumline, where plaque often accumulates and contributes to bad breath.

  • Gentle Circular Motions: Use gentle, circular motions to clean the surfaces of your teeth. Avoid horizontal back and forth, vertical up and down and aggressive brushing, as this may strip the delicate gums back and expose the sensitive root surfaces of your teeth making your teeth 50% more sensitive to cold and hot temperature changes over time. Move the brush from tooth to tooth, allowing the bristles to gently sweep just under the gum surface.

Clean all surfaces:

  • As well as the outer surfaces, brush the chewing and inner surfaces of your teeth, where plaque can easily build up.
  • A tongue cleaner is an effective and gentle tool to sweep the surface of the tongue removing overnight build up of dead cells and food debris that clog up your taste buds. This will improve your taste sensation.

Timing:

Use an app or a timer that is set to two (2) minutes and notice how nice it feels to have clean teeth. This will encourage you to be more mindful during this activity and contribute to feelings of well-being which will motivate you to make this activity enjoyable and one you look forward to every morning and evening.

You may also consider using an electric toothbrush with a built-in timer.

Improving your brushing technique can make a significant difference in your oral health.
